How to Build a Million Dollar IT Company and Then Sell It

Find a contract or consulting project for around $500-1700 per day. Pay the IT engineer $200-700 per day (depending upon their skill level) and keep the rest as profit.

Myths

Here are a few of the myths I hear from people who want to start their own IT company but talk themselves out of it time and time again:

  • I need to be an IT expert - NO. You can find deals and then plug experts in
  • I need to invest a lot of money - NO. You just need a laptop and about $200 for stationary
  • I have to be available 24/7 - NO. I will show you how to find remote call taking teams who do that
  • I need to give up my job - NO. I grew Networks Inc. part time until it replaced my salary
  • Blue chips won't be interested. NO WAY. I have worked with very large companies.
  • You need a office to meet customers. NO. I use a mail drop address and hire venues if needed.
  • It is risky, I could lose my house. NO. I will show you how to build it on the side risk free.

Common Mistakes

The mistake most IT people make is to concentrate all their time on technical abilities and then hope that customers will want to hire them. Even if they are able to find the odd customer they usually end up having to deal with:

  • Working up to 14 hours per day running from job to job
  • Having to look after low paying customers who don't appreciate them
  • Trying to compete with other IT professionals on price alone (BIG MISTAKE)
  • Not able to look for new business because they are too busy working
  • No time for going on courses or seeing their own family
  • Worrying about cash flow and waiting for payment by slow payers

It's no wonder that 90% of startups go bust in the first 3 years. They run out of one of two things, time or money. Most eventually have to go back to the nine to five rat race to pay off the bank loans they took out to get started.

Over the past eight years I have learned through building my own successful IT companies what works and doesn't work. All the flashy sales books and marketing theory don't usually work because they are written by people who have never done it for real. You can know all the clever sales patter but if you can't get in front of decision makers it is useless knowledge.

I have tried everything from business networking, direct mail, e-mail blasting, internet marketing, cold calling. You name it, I have tried it. I can tell you exactly what works and what doesn't. If I had to start out again, I could save about four years of time and grinding effort by concentrating on the 20% of tactics which will produce 80% of your results.
