How to Network Tip of the Week #58 – 16th October 2008

===========================================================

Welcome to the fifty eighth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

How to Build Your Own Cisco Home Lab

If you are wondering what to buy, how much to spend and
where to buy the equipment from them this article is for
you. You are going to need about 20-30 hours hands on time
in order to pass your CCNA so it is either use my live
rack or buy your own.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/581.cfm

===========================================================

The CCNA and the Credit Crunch

I am seeing many students get qualified and walk into nice
IT jobs and contracts still. Despite all of the doom and
gloom you may be reading in the press and watching on the
news there are still plenty of network roles available and
open for qualified people and I can’t see that changing.

Here are my thoughts.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/582.cfm

===========================================================

60 Days to CCNA

I am going to close this down later today until November.
There are plenty of people using the facility now and I
want to make some changes based upon feedback so far so if
you have been waiting then now is the time to act. I will
not be letting the odd one sign up here and there like I
did last time.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/department95.cfm

===========================================================

Writers Wanted

I am looking for some contributors to add articles about
Cisco exams and CCNA related topics such as the above CCAN
home lab article.

If you would like to join the writing staff of howtonetwork
(which you can add to your resume) please send me a sample
article (preferably in html format) to:

help@howtonetwork.net

===========================================================

My Exam Day Experience – By John D.

Last week I spoke to one of my howtonetwork.net students
who recently re-took his CCNA. He didn’t have the best of
experiences, partly due to his lack of preparation and
partly due to faults with the testing software.

When you read it you will gain some valuable tips for your
exam day.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/577.cfm

===========================================================

CCNA Simplified – Out Now

If you haven’t ordered your copy yet then it isn’t too
late. The first run of copies are now in the hands of
their proud owners.

Members get a special price plus an extra 10 hours rack
time when they invest in a copy.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/552.cfm

===========================================================

CCNA Articles

I have added a few CCNA and study articles to my IT
training site www.networksinc.co.uk and if you are still
studying for your CCNA or CCENT you will find some of them
very useful.

CCNA Articles

===========================================================

CCNP Boot Camp

Last 1 seat available for our CCNP boot camp in the UK.

CCNP Training

===========================================================

Cisco Exam Coaching

I have been asked several times over the last few months
if I am available to do some private coaching for a few
weeks for individuals who need some extra support to get
through their CCNA or CCENT.

Up until now I have been too busy getting CCNA Simplified
out as well as other projects. I have a few weeks free
leading up to November and can literally take on a hand
full of clients. I only want to work with people who are
serious about passing their exam. If you work with me you
will pass. Period.

I can also assist with you getting into your first IT role
as well as how to approach companies. I have posted a page
where you can join a waiting list and the programme should
go live next week.

Anyone on the waiting list will have first refusal for the
seats. There will be a charge for the programme which will
be weekly and from start to finish should take you 2-8
weeks depending upon your experience and free time to study.

Reviewers Still Wanted

We are about to start adding product reviews for things
such as router sims, Cisco study sites etc. I will be
doing the main reviews but I want each review to have a
second opinion.

If you fancy yourself as a product reviewer then please
send over a 2 page sample as a .doc file to the address
below. Please do a review of the IP Subnet Calculator
which is available on the site.

I can only reply to the person(s) I want to work with
sorry. I am looking for a clear and friendly writing style
with a fair summary of positive and negative points to
the products.

Here is the subnet calculator:

Are You Ready for the CCNA Exam?

It can be a very dejecting experience to fail the CCNA exam.
Especially if you feel you have put in a lot of study time
and have given it your best shot.

With a strict study schedule involving daily labs, theory
and practise exams then you are giving yourself the best
chance possible. The only reason we fail is the exam is
due to lack of preparation.

The below CCNA prep test will ask you if you have covered
all the necessary areas listed on Ciscos CCNA exam syllabus.

You would need to be able to answer ‘correct’ to each
question in order to be ready for the exam. Bear in mind
that the CCNA has about a 50% pass rate so it is still
considered to be a tough exam by all in the IT industry.

New Tip Location

Instead of the UK, this weeks Cisco CCNA tip of the week
is coming from sunny Brisbane. I am over visiting a good
friend of mine who emigrated here two years ago.

We have spent the day at Mooloolaba beach sitting in the
sunshine. After that we went to a nice coffee shop. It is
a hard life.

Here is an image of the beach:

===========================================================

Why Some People Never Pass Their CCNA

I think some people don’t actually realise how hard it is
to pass the CCNA, even if you are already in the IT
industry.

As a ballpark figure, I would say that you need to study
for about 2 hours per day for about 4-6 weeks if you want
to pass your CCNA. I have seen people do it in less time
than that but that seems to be about the average.

If you skip study days or do less than 2 hours per day
then of course it may take longer.

============================================================

Welcome to the thirty-sixth www.howtonetwork.net tip of the
week.

============================================================

Brief Tip of the Week

I’m still in Australia. Just flown back to Brisbane from
Melbourne. I can’t believe the difference in climates. I
know which one I prefer!

The TOTW will be back to normal next week. This week it is
just a summary of things I feel you need to know in your
quest to pass your CCNA and have a successful career as
a Cisco engineer.

===========================================================

Welcome New Members

I have seen members joining in their droves. I haven’t
had a chance to welcome you personally but I do appreciate
you joining the site.

Please say hello on the forums and post any questions or
send feedback.

We are all here to help you enjoy your CCNA studies and
do something useful with the qualification.

===========================================================

ISDN and the CCNA

I was asked in the discussion forum why ISDN is still on
the site if it isn’t in the CCNA exam anymore.

A couple of reasons why ISDN and some other subjects have
been left on the site.

First. You may be tested on it if you are taking the old
CCNA 640-801 which you can take if you are part of the
Cisco Academy (or so I am told).

Second. I like to add extra topics and areas which although
are not tested in the exam I think you may come across at
some point or at least may need to know about.

My old driving instructor once explained to me that he
was not teaching me how to pass my driving test but how
to be a good driver.

I will be reviewing as many sims as possible so please

Live Rack Coming

There have been a lot of delays getting the rack built
but we will be installing it in the first week of June
in the UK and then asking 5 members to test it before it
does live.

When it goes live all members will have 24*7 access to
one of three live racks of routers and switches. You
will be able to book slots and connect to the equipment
over the web.

There is a basic rack of 5 routers and a switch. A
switching rack for VLANs and trunking and an advanced
routing rack.

This will make howtonetwork.net the only resource you will
ever need to pass your CCNA or CCENT. All only for $9.97

Cisco Foundation Security Exam

There are some cool new certs you may want to consider
taking to improve your skill set and marketability.

Cisco have the new Securing Cisco Network Devices (SND)
exam available. It is aimed at those of you who have
passed your CCNA.

http://tinyurl.com/t6b6k

This exam qualifies you as a Cisco Information Security
Specialist

We may be adding study material for this if there is
enough interest.

===========================================================

Cisco Exam – Router Sim Questions

As you know. During the CCNA and CCENT exam you will have
to configure routers and switches using their router sim.
This presents a problem because of course it will not
behave exactly like a live router or switch.

Here are some common questions about the sim with my
answers. Please note that we cannot tell you what you
will be asked in the exam but we do want to prepare you
for the actual exam the best we can.

If we have missed anything off or have got it wrong please
let us know.

============================================================

Affiliates Required

We will be launching an affiliate scheme in the next few
weeks. To join you must be a member (because you can’t
recommend what you have not used).

I am very keen to hear from those of you at the Cisco
Academy who can recommend the site to your friends or
those of you who work in an IT department who can refer
the site to your work colleagues.

More news soon.

CCNA Weekend Bootcamps – UK

We have added a course in Birmingham in the UK. If you live
nearby then we would love to see you.

We plan to run courses in the USA later this year as well
as train up trainers who can run our weekend CCNA boot camp
model in various US cities.

How to Network Tip of the Week #39 – 29th May 2008

Welcome to the thirty-ninth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

Members Passing Their CCNA

Congratulations to Mark Blewett who a flew through his
CCENT last week. Great job Mark. Who is next?

‘Hi Paul,

I would just like to thank you for all your help so far.
I sat my CCENT/ICND1 on tuesday and got 904. I plan to do
my icnd 2 soon. I would have done it sooner however work
just keeps getting in the way! i’m very grateful of your
material as it has been invaluable to me (especially your
subnetting chart).

Regards

Mark Blewett

Live Rack Coming

There have been a lot of delays getting the rack built
but we will be installing it in the first week of June
in the UK and then asking 5 members to test it before it
does live.

When it goes live all members will have 24*7 access to
one of three live racks of routers and switches. You
will be able to book slots and connect to the equipment
over the web.

There is a basic rack of 5 routers and a switch. A
switching rack for VLANs and trunking and an advanced
routing rack.

This will make howtonetwork.net the only resource you will
ever need to pass your CCNA or CCENT. All only for $9.97
per month.

Wildcard Masks

Do you know how to quickly write out a wildcard mask for
an access list or OSPF? A lot of people seem to get stuck
for some reason when it is very easy to work them out.

Here is a quick primer.

Wildcard masks

You will be expected to understand wildcard masks for
the exam and are unlikely to pass if you can’t work them
out.

Content Requests

Apart from the live rack which is being built as we speak
I am pretty confident that howtonetwork.net has everything
you will ever need to pass your CCNET or CCNA. I am happy
to add more CCNA related content or other subjects which
will help you in your day to day role.

Let me know if you want any theory or videos adding.

All serious requests considered.

If we have missed anything off or have got it wrong please
let us know.

Cisco License Update

We have sold licenses to teach our Cisco CCNA weekend boot
camps in Cardiff, North and South London and now Reading.

Later in the year we will be looking to do the same in
Scotland and Ireland. After that we will be coming out to
the USA.

If you feel you would like to help people pass their CCNA
and also run your own business then drop us a line:

Video Request?

We are happy to add content about various Cisco subjects
which you may find useful. They don’t have to be included
in the CCNA syllabus but should be general enough to be of
use to a lot of people who visit the site.
