How to Network Tip of the Week #40 – 5th June 2008

===========================================================

Welcome to the fortieth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Members Passing Their CCNA

Congratulations to Andy Stevenson who just passed his CCNA
this week. Andy studied very hard and got a very
respectable 920. Who is next?

‘Hi Paul,

Just a quick note to say thanks for you site, after a long
time( I joined back in 2007 I got down to taking the CCNA
exam and got 920, and that’s down to your web site.

Regards

Andy Stevenson’

===========================================================

Happy Birthday to Me

I am 38 today. I don’t really celebrate much but I may let
my partner (we can’t call them girlfriends anymore) take
me out for some Indian food.

It has been an exciting 12 months for me with the launch
of howtonetwork.net, licensing my famous Cisco CCNA weekend
boot camps and releasing my autobiography from the 12 years
I worked in the police Good Guys Wear Blue

My baby is due to arrive in just over 5 weeks and I will
take July off from work but still send the tips out.

Looking forward. I will be releasing my next book in a
few months. It is called ‘7 People Saved My Life.’ The
live rack of Cisco kit is being installed as we speak. I
will be releasing 3 more licences to teach my Cisco
weekend courses in the UK before taking the model out
to the USA where I have a feeling it will be even more
popular.

===========================================================

Do You want More Exams Covering?

Did you know that this e-mail goes out to over 1100 people
and about 60 more join each week. Firstly thanks for
joining and I hope you enjoy the content. The only problem
is that every few people come back to use with replies
when I ask for ideas for content or ideas to improve
the site!

As you know, the CCNA is a great qualification and it is
also just the start. From there you can stay with the
core subjects or specialise in voice, wireless or into
a career in security. For this reason, Cisco are just
about to release exams in those subjects. They are
foundation level.

If you want to take the foundation exams you need to
at least have passed the CCENT which is also known as
the ICND. It is about half of the CCNA.

I think we could easily cover the security one but I
won’t bother if there is no demand for it either on
the www.howtonetwork.net site or as a weekend bootcamp
for the UK and USA.

If you would like to study for that after your CCNA then
we can add the content.

Here is some more info on the IINS.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/519.cfm

If you want this adding as content please let us know. It
would mean you get more value out of the site once you
have passed your CCNA or CCENT.

help@howtonetwork.net

===========================================================

Content Requests

Apart from the live rack which is being built as we speak
I am pretty confident that howtonetwork.net has everything
you will ever need to pass your CCNET or CCNA. I am happy
to add more CCNA related content or other subjects which
will help you in your day to day role.

Let me know if you want any theory or videos adding.

All serious requests considered.

===========================================================

Finding Your Dream Cisco Job

I hope you are not listening to those idiots who tell you
that you need 20 years experience and a triple CCIE before
you even dare to apply for an IT role. Rubbish.

I wouldn’t bother wasting my time running a CCNA site if
there wasn’t a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. OK,
so you may not be able to walk into a senior role with just
a CCNA but then I am guessing you wouldn’t want to either.

I have stared a series of articles which will help you to
land a fun, rewarding and well paid network role. Stick
with me and you will be fine (honest).

Here is the first of many articles.

============================================================

Cisco License Update

We have sold licenses to teach our Cisco CCNA weekend boot
camps in Cardiff, North and South London and now Reading.

Later in the year we will be looking to do the same in
Scotland and Ireland. After that we will be coming out to
the USA.

If you feel you would like to help people pass their CCNA
and also run your own business then drop us a line:

CCNA Weekend Bootcamps – UK

If you fancy a weekend of routing and switching fun then
please feel to join us on one of our famous CCNA weekend
boot camps with a 97% exam success rate.

Dates are available in Cardiff, Milton Keynes, Birmingham
and North London. Other venues to follow.

How to Network Tip of the Week #42 – 19th June 2008

===========================================================

Welcome to the forty-second www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Live Rack Update

Your live rack of Cisco kit is still being installed. We
will be testing it next week and then getting a few members
to try it out for any bugs or problems before going live

So long as all goes according to plan. You will soon have
24/7 access to three racks of Cisco routers and switches so
you can get hands on practise at a time convenient to you.

More news next week I hope.

===========================================================

Routing Exam Download

I must be getting soft.

I have just posted the members only routing quiz for use
by readers of this newsletter. It will be available for
download for 24 hours only so you had better act now if
you don’t want to miss it.

Please unzip it before you use it and click on the flash
icon to start the quiz.

There is a small bubble with an ‘i’ in it which will give
you hints and tips.

===========================================================

Getting the Best From Discussion Forums

I do check discussion forums from time to time and I am
always amazed at what I see. Rather than finding technical
questions I usually see people asking others what they
should be doing with their lives. ‘Should I be doing CCNA
or should I do Microsoft?’ ‘Should I leave my IT degree
or should I stick it out?’

I wonder if they realise that the people giving the answers
are often just as stuck as they are.

May I suggest the best way to use and get the most from
discussion forums. Including ours.

Read more below:

===========================================================

CCNA Flash Cards – Coming Soon

We are in the process of writing a large number of flash
cards which you will be able to study for your CCNA or
CCENT exams.

You can put them on your PC or laptop and spend about 10
minutes per day learning key points which you will need to
know to pass your exams and apply your knowledge to the
real world of IT.

===========================================================

Content Requests

Apart from the live rack which is being built as we speak
I am pretty confident that howtonetwork.net has everything
you will ever need to pass your CCNET or CCNA. I am happy

How to Network Tip of the Week #43 – 26th June 2008

===========================================================

Welcome to the forty-third www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Live Rack Update

The rack is now installed and can be reached over the web.
I have gone back to the developers with a few issues which
need resolving. I am hoping that it will be ready for
testing by a few members early next week.

===========================================================

Welcome New Members

It seems that word is getting around about the site and new
members are joining at a fantastic rate. Thank you so much
for coming on board. I can see lots of posts on the forums
as well.

On howtonetwork.net forums you can count on honest replies
and valuable feedback rather than the usual forum
experience which is sarcasm, massive egos and hidden
agendas.

===========================================================

Any New CCNAs or CCENTs?

I am beginning to worry. I haven’t heard about any members
passing for a week. Are you all getting ready for your
holidays or slacking off your studies 😉

Let me know as soon as you pass so we can inspire the
other members and congratulate you.

===========================================================

CCNA Audio Review

I have recorded a Q and A about some CCNA and CCENT level
topic. I basically post the questions and you give me
the answers and I give you the answer a few seconds later.

The idea is that you can get all the answers right and
then can move onto the next recording which should be
available next week.

The first one is free. Others will be members only. By
the way, I am not a movie voiceover person so you will
have to bear with me. Please don’t listen while driving
or operating machinery (joke).

CCNA Audio

===========================================================

New Cisco CCNA Certifications

If you haven’t heard already, Cisco have announced new
CCNA level certifications for voice, security and wireless.

This is great news if you want to specialise in any of
these areas but were not ready to take on the full four
exam route. In order to take the new CCNA certs you need
to be a current CCNA so there will be no changes to the
current CCNA.

I have asked before who wants content on the new certs
and out of 1500 people only 2 replied! I was lost for
words. I will be adding the security IINS content over
the next few weeks. Great news because you can stay
on the site and continue to study once you pass your
CCNA.

Here is the Cisco learning centre page.

This is part 3 of many articles helping you to land your

your definition of a dream IT job it and equally important
getting you to write it down.

How to Network Tip of the Week #44 – 10th July 2008

===========================================================

Welcome to the forty-fourth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

The Son Becomes the Father

At 0840 on Thursday 3rd July my partner Donna gave birth
to our daughter Grace Lydia Browning. She weighed 6lbs
and 15 oz or 3.1 kg. She was born at our home in a birthing
pool drug free.

Two things changed the instant she arrived. First was a
new found respect for women on my part. What Donna had to
go through to carry Grace for nine months and then deliver
left me speechless.

Second, when Grace came out and looked into my eyes, for
the first time in 38 years I finally understood what
unconditional love means. It isn’t something that could
ever be described in words.

Thank you all for your words of congratulations. I
would appreciate no more e-mails because at 1500 members
it will crash my server. I know you are all very happy
for us all.

Here are a few photos.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/527.cfm

===========================================================

Live Rack Update

The rack is now working. I have a crack team of members
using it at the moment and we have found a few small issues
but it is going live for all members of howtonetwork.net
in a few days. Please note that you will be required to
complete the rack training program before your account is
activated. This will ensure you get the best out of it.

The rack tour and training program will be online in a few
days so please keep an eye out for it.

All members of howtonetwork.net will be allocated 15 hours
access for no charge. After that, it will be about $2 per
hour or less if you buy larger blocks. It was going to be
10 hours but since it is very late I am bumping everyone
up to 15.

If you have been thinking about joining us but haven’t yet
then now is a good time to. If you join before 12th July
I will give you 15 hours rack time instead of 10 which is
the standard allocation.

We will be happy to provide certificates of hands on
experience to our members if they want to prove to others
how much live Cisco router and switch access they have.

===========================================================

New CCNAs and CCENTs

Congratulations to the following people who have all
passed their exams this week.

Martin Berrington passed his CCNA with a score of 920. I
know Martin studied hard and deserved to pass.

Richard Barker passed his CCNA with 854. It was his second
attempt because he just missed it the first time.

Patrick Green passed his CCENT with a very nice 922. He
wrote:

‘I read the Wendell Odom CISCO Certification Library
Book, and I took the ICND 1 class at the [removed] training
centre. After exhausting those resources, I still barely
understood subnetting. With your resources, I can now
confidently subnet any Class A, B, or C network with any
mask. I used your subnetting secrets chart on the exam and
even subnetted some of the exam in my head.

Let me know as soon as you pass so we can inspire the
other members and congratulate you.

10 Reasons Why You Must Pass Your CCNA

Yes, I know you have been meaning to get on with passing
your CCNA. You have some books and maybe a few other study
tools but you never seem to be able to knuckle down and
follow the study plan you keep meaning to write.

Now is the best time for you to pass your CCNA. There are
big transitions taking place in the global economy at the
moment and the certified engineer will always have the
advantage over the person who says he or she can do the
job but has never bothered to take the exam to prove it.

Here are a few reasons you need to get certified ASAP:

Cisco CCNA Security – IINS

We are a good part the way through completing the theory
section for the new CCNA Security – IINS exam. There will
be practise exams for you to use as well.

After that we will follow up with labs and videos. This
is just another reason why membership is such good value
to you.

Live Rack is Now Live

Thank you to all of you for bearing with us while the rack
was tested. If I had been a project manager I would surely
have been sacked by now.

About six months later than I thought it would be ready,
the live rack is now installed and working. There is a
link to the training program below. It is for the exclusive
use of howtonetwork.net members and features everything
you need to get the hands on experience you need to pass
your CCENT and CCNA.

If you haven’t joined yet then now would be a great time to
do so because I am giving anyone who joins the site this
week 15 hours use instead of the usual 10. Also, from today
if you recommend a friend who joins the site they can
e-mail us your details and we will give you a further 10
hours rack use and 10 hours for every other person you
recommend.

Here is the live Cisco rack site:

I am putting the finishing touches to a 600 page CCNA study
guide based upon the www.howtonetwork.net website. It will
contain all the things you need to know to pass your CCNA

to having the manual is that you can read it anywhere since
you can pop it in your bag.

I absolutely guarantee it will be the best CCNA study guide

nights have been worth it thanks for your help i feel a

With the right materials and some determination you can

Buddy – Can You Spare Me a Link?

I am still very keen to hear from those of you who are

howtonetwork.net is flying up the Google listings and that
is a good thing.

I am wondering if you have access to a good quality web

Can you all please remember that you have to do the very

New CCNA Study Guide

Cisco CCNA Simplified is very nearly done. I absolutely
guarantee that is will be the best CCNA study guide you
have ever read in your life. In fact, I am so confident in
it that it comes with a 100% money back guarantee. I don’t
think any other Cisco authors offer that last time I
checked.

It should be ready for sale next week. Members of
howtonetwork.net will be able to take advantage of a
special discounted offer.

===========================================================

Coming Soon

CCNA flash card decks will soon be available to all members
so you will be able to study on the go.

We are still writing the content for the Cisco CCNA IINS
security qualification. Should be ready in a few weeks we
are hoping. The videos will take a short while longer.

Cisco CCNA Simplified study manual will be ready in a week
roughly. When it is ready, I confidently say that you will
be able to set fire to your other CCNA study books or use
them to prop up uneven tables.

===========================================================

10 Books Every Cisco Engineer Must Read

I am guessing that you don’t just want to scrape through
your exam and then pray you don’t encounter anything
outside the scope of the CCNA syllabus in your networking
career.

For this reason, I have put together a list of the books
I personally think should be on the book shelf of every
serious Cisco engineer. When I worked at Cisco TAC I
know that we all had a copy of each of these books. I
have of course slipped my book in there.

CCNA Study Guides

Don’t feel you need to buy them all now and remember that
you can get them cheap on eBay or Amazon marketplace.

===========================================================

Congratulations

Well done to Colin Mc Ouat who passed his CCNA this week
with a very healthy 936.

===========================================================

New Cisco CCNA Blog

I have started my own Cisco CCNA blog where you will be
able to access loads of great articles, videos and other
cool content which you will find useful when it comes to
exam time, technical interviews or during your time as
a Cisco network engineer.

The first few entries feature important exam news you
need to know plus a round up of some great study resources
which will help you study and pass your exams.

I hope you join it.

between Cisco 2950 switches to YouTube. I have also added
a video showing you how to configure static NAT which of
course is a Cisco CCNA topic

Please can you view them and rate them.

Pass Your CCNA in 60 Days

I am in the process of writing a 60 day Cisco CCNA study
plan and along with it I will be issuing a challenge. The
course will be open to members and non members and will
be free.

If you follow my study plan and advice, you will pass your
CCNA 60 days after having started it (so it isn’t just a
clever name).

It should be ready to go in September.

CCNA Training in the USA

We are thinking about coming over to the USA to run some
CCNA weekend boot camps. If that is something you are
interested in or even better, if you work for a company
who would like some on site Cisco CCNA training then let
us know.

Just drop us a line at help@howtonetwork.net or if you want
to come on a weekend course just send an e-mail with your
city in the title and we will gauge interest.

New Forensic Checks at Cisco Testing Centres

No, they won’t be swapping your mouth just yet but Cisco
are clamping down hard on exam cheats. Instead of getting
your pass through you are going to have your photo ID
checked before your pass certificate is issued.

Don’t feel you need to buy them all now and remember that
you can get them cheap on eBay or Amazon marketplace.

Buddy – Can You Spare Me a Link?

I am still very keen to hear from those of you who are
webmasters for good quality web sites.

howtonetwork.net is flying up the Google listings and that
is a good thing.

I am wondering if you have access to a good quality web
site where you can add a link to point to us. If you
fulfil the below criteria please let me know and we can
work out a win/win with either extended membership of
the site or extra rack credits.

If you have a .gov or a .edu domain then I will be
especially interested in chatting with you.

Please drop me a line at:

Welcome to the forty-ninth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

Students Passing

Well done to all the below students who have passed their
CCNA and CCENT exams:

Colin Mc Ouat – 936
Ed Wiles – 993
Wayne McEvans (CCENT) – 1000 (Perfect score!)
Richard Barker – 854
Patrick Green (CCENT) – 922
Ferdinand Abe – 907
Davinder Punia – 933

Ferdinand gave lots of great study advice on the site
forum. You can visit it now to see what he says. He also
said:

‘About the exam, I can’t give you the exact Q&A but I
could give you some tips:

1. Practice and practice your Subnetting, VLSM and route
summarization. I think 50% of the exam involves all these.
That’s why I ran out of time in one of the simulations.
You need to compute your IP addresses first, before you
can configure all the routers and switches. The exam is
more difficult than what I expected.

2. Practice your LABS. Use the Live Rack for more
routers and switches. When you do your practice labs,
don’t be satisfied if your configuration is already
working. The most important is issue some “Show” commands
and be able to understand all the details of the output.

3. Know your commands. Tab didn’t work in actual exam.
Shortcuts work though.

Hope I mentioned everything. To end this, I would like
to say thank you to Paul and Howtonetwork. This
achievement is never been possible without you.

-Ferdinand’

Well done Ferdinand and thanks for the tips.

Cisco Challenge Labs

You asked for some challenge labs so you can have them!

We have started adding challenge labs. They are free to
use but the solutions will only be available to members. I
suggest you use them once you have built up some confidence
on the standard labs on the site.

CCNA Labs

We will be building the list of labs over the next week
so please send any requests to us at help@howtonetwork.net

CCNP Boot Camp

We have a Cisco CCNP boot camp starting in November this
year. Any reader of this newsletter can come on the CCNA
weekend for no charge when they book on the CCNP. That
means you save £397 and you still have plenty of time to
pass your CCNA in time for the CCNP.

CCNA Flash Study Cards

We are just about to add study cards to the site. There is
just a small tweak to the installation software. When it
goes live you will be able to download and test yourself
on various Cisco CCNA and CCENT topics, mix up your deck
questions and improve your knowledge.

I still can’t believe I am only charging $9.97 per month
for all this stuff. I must be mad!

CCNA Flash Cards

Keep checking the page because it is going live very soon.

Cisco CCNA and CCENT Cram Cards Added

I don’t know about you but drilling facts and figures
over and over again is the best way to get all the
important details into your memory so you can recall
them in the exam or whilst on customer site.

For this reason you can now benefit from exclusive CCNA
and CCENT cram cards. Each deck is tailored to a specific
exam area such as IP addressing or wireless. We are
writing more decks as you read this but for now there
are four for you to benefit from or just one deck if you
are not a member yet.

Please visit the below page and watch the video showing
you how the software works. As per usual, any feedback
is most welcome.

Live Cisco Rack

I keep getting e-mails from members asking for their
username and password for the rack. Once again – you are
allocated your rack once you have completed the 7 short
lessons and filled in the user agreement. Until that time
you don’t have access, even if you are a member.

Cisco Exam Syllabuses

We have added clickable Cisco syllabuses to the site. This
means you can follow your study time in line with how
Cisco are going to structure your exam questions.

I have noticed that there are a couple of areas which
they appear to have left vague and there are a few other
areas which we don’t have labs for (such as RSTP+). I
really don’t think you would ever be asked to configure
some of the stuff they are asking for in the exam but we
will endeavour to add more content nonetheless.
