How to Network Tip of the Week #92 – 25th June 2009

===========================================================

Welcome to the ninety second www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

I am taking my niece to Disneyland Paris tomorrow so I’m
really looking forward to that. She is 6 years old. I
forget what it was like to be a child and have that sort
of excitement.

There is loads of cool stuff for you this week so please
take about five minutes away from surfing, e-mail etc and
have a good read.

===========================================================

Well done to Sean Goolia who passed his CCNA this week
after many weeks of hard work. Sean is a great example
of a person who studied hard EVERY DAY and never made
excuses about work getting in the way.

Sean took the time to post some great exam advice on the
forum and I consider it essential reading:

http://bit.ly/10uFii

Well done also to Russell Oxenham who passed his ICND2
making him a fully fledged CCNA.

It makes me sad so see how many people quit every week when
they are so close to passing. I guess if it was easy then
everyone would be a CCNA.

===========================================================

Inner Circle Coaching

I am closing down my private coaching service because it
is too labor intensive. I am considering starting up an
inner circle coaching group where we have weekly tele-
conferences and you get extra exams and videos. In order
to cover the conference calls and time there will be a
weekly charge of $27.

If this is something you would like to be a part of to
boost your CCNA studies then please let me know by
filling in the below survey.

http://bit.ly/SUmJQ

===========================================================

Essential CCNA Exam Advice

I hate to hear of my students failing their exams. When I
see their comments I can always see what went wrong. They
often fail due to either:

1. Slow hands on speed
2. Go blank (nerves)
3. Didn’t use practice exams enough.

I have prepared an article to prevent this happening to
you. Please read, rate it and digest it.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/1153

===========================================================

New Switching Labs Added

As well as the new switching labs, I am uploading new
videos for you to follow. I consider these labs and videos
crucial to your CCNA exam success. If you can’t do them
then your chances of passing are slim at best.

Videos:

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/department66.cfm

More details here:

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/department54.cfm

I have uploaded one of the videos to YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GkYIzlhSPA

Hands on labs:

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/department54.cfm

===========================================================

OSPF For CCNP

The OSPF chapter has been uploaded. We will be adding
next and previous page links to each page shortly. It may
serve as a handy reference for those of you studying for
your CCNA if you want a bit more depth on certain areas.

Please don’t get yourself confused with it and just dip in
if, as and when you need to.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/members/department126.cfm

In the next few days we will be reformatting the CCNP
BSCI page so it has icons for the theory, labs, flash
cards and exams. Everything is done now…we just need to
get some more challenging labs written.

===========================================================

CCNA and CCNP Security

I know a lot of you have been asking for voice training.
I hear you but first we are adding security for CCNA and
the CCNP. The reason is that we have to get that part
done for those members who are doing the CCNP currently.

The CCNP does have a voice section so we will see if we
can do the CCNA voice along with that. There is an awful
lot of kit required for that as well so we need to work
out how to give remote access to that.

===========================================================

Do You Work For a Company?

We do offer group memberships to companies who have 5 or
more members who want to join the site. Why should you
pay when your company can?

Please help us to grow the site by recommending us to
your IT manager. We can grant him or her 2 weeks access
to the site to test it first.

help@howtonetwork.net

===========================================================

Would You Like to be a Cisco Trainer?

The website is now being drafted. This will be to give
you a taster of how the business model will work. We are
sourcing a venue in the USA to run the training course
which will be for 7 days in late September.

Please fill in the form below to express your interest.
We will be hosting a webinar and then interviewing
candidates in about 2 weeks time.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/1004

===========================================================

UK Cisco Training – Discounts

I have twisted the owner of our sister company Networks
Inc who offer weekend Cisco training in the UK. They do
everything from CCNA to voice, security, CCNP and CCIE
training.

If you call Stuart and tell him you are a member of this
site he has agreed to give you a very good deal.

http://www.networksinc.co.uk

===========================================================

What is Your Job?

There was a great post on the forum by Kevin Hughes asking
what all the howtonetwork.net members did for a living. I
realised that we are not all in IT. In fact, I am actually
a full time internet marketer..howtonetwork.net is just
one of about ten sites I run.

I have given Kevin 10 rack hours for the best forum
question of the week.

If you can add what you do that would be great.

http://bit.ly/vhDVS

===========================================================

CCNA Jobs

I can’t promise anything but I know of a company who is
hiring internationally for Cisco engineers. They are
growing at a massive rate and take on engineers who may
not have passed their exams yet.

While some companies are taking a hit at the moment others
seem to be growing like crazy! They are also throwing
training at their team members, CCNA to CCIE.

I am going to get more details from them and then let
all members know of any jobs going. I think most of them
are in Europe but that could change.

Please DO NOT contact me about these jobs. I will post on
here and howtonetwork.net with any openings. I will also
highly recommend those who have passed their CCNA first.

===========================================================

Build a Million Dollar IT Business

I have a couple of seats left on this and then I am
closing it off. As a sweetener I am going to let you bring
a friend or colleague on this if you book this week. This
means you can share the cost.

I can’t emphasize how important it is to know how to
marketing yourself or your company, especially in the
current climate.

===========================================================

We will be adding a couple of exam style questions every
day to our Twitter account. If you want to keep sharp then
please follow me on Twitter:

How to Network Tip of the Week #93 – 02nd July 2009

===========================================================

Welcome to the ninety third www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

We British love to complain about the weather. Find us in
any country and we will be saying it is too hot/cold/wet/
damp/changeable.

It is scorching this week. Hot, hot hot. We have put the
fan in our babies room to keep her cool. She gets all the
mod cons. Meanwhile I am sitting in my garden writing this
and swatting flies off me at 30 second intervals.

I had a brilliant weekend at Disneyland Paris with my
niece. To see the look on her six year olds face as she
sees the castle and Mickey Mouse was priceless.

===========================================================

New Child Sponsored

Thanks to all current members who have helped us to
sponsor another child. Waynitu is a 9 year old girl who
lives in Ethiopia, one of the poorest countries in the
world.

Sponsorship ensures she will have a good meal each day,
have a place to sleep and an education.

Please take a moment to look at your sponsorship page:

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/department115.cfm

We have a goal to sponsor another 8 children.

===========================================================

We Are Hiring

We are looking for somebody who can help out with the site
for around 1-2 hours per day. The role will involve rack
support and customer support. Please review the role
requirements below:

http://bit.ly/pCnle

===========================================================

PaulBrowning.com is Live

I am actually more interested in personal development,
self esteem improvement and internet marketing than
anything else.

To this end I have launched www.paulbrowning.com which is
a site for anyone else interested in those things. I have
yet to add a bit more content including an interview I
did yesterday with one of the UKs top counselors who is
also a good friend of mine.

The site is not quite live to the public yet but I thought
you would want to be the first to see it.

In the meantime, anyone who joins the tip of the week
also gets a copy of my new e-book ‘How to Get Anything You
Want in Life.’

Paul Browning

===========================================================

Cisco CCNP BSCI Live

It has actually been live for a while now but now the
content is pretty much ready. All prepared by our dual
CCIE and is what I feel the highest quality.

CCNP BSCI

We are in the process of adding some more challenging labs
at the moment. We will then be moving onto CCNA and CCNP
security modules.

===========================================================

Rack Issues

There is an intermittent fault on the rack which means
that every few weeks people can log in but the putty
window is blank.

We are working on a solution for this but at the moment it
looks like we are going to have to reload the service on
the rack every week which means one hours downtime.

Sorry about that.

===========================================================

Feedback

I have been asked if I am open to feedback about the site.

I actually welcome it but most of the time nobody tells me
what they think. I consider all requests and those which
make sense I integrate into the site.

Please feel free to contact me via the ‘Ask Paul’ part of
the site.

===========================================================

Question of the Week

Well done to Richard Needham who asked about TCP acks on
the forum.

Richard gets another 10 hours rack time.

===========================================================

Upgrading Membership

I had a note from a platinum member who asked how is it
that people can upgrade a month before their exam just to
get the free exams.

That makes sense to me. While I never thought about it, I
don’t think it is particularly fair to stay at silver and
then jump to platinum just for a month to get the freebies.

I will give anyone who wishes, 2 days grace to upgrade to
the exams and unlimited rack time and then will have to ask
anyone who wants to jump up to pay for their exams.

===========================================================

Build a Million Dollar IT Business

This is your last chance to book on the above seminar. I
will not be running it ever again. I am putting it on for
two reasons. To bring along some friends who run their own
companies and want to grow them (so I can share what I have
learned) and to film it to make it into a product.

How to Network Tip of the Week #94 – 9th July 2009

===========================================================

Welcome to the ninety fourth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

A bit of a shorter tip this week sorry. I am busily
putting the finishing touches to this weekends seminar on
how to build your own successful IT company.

This is your last ever chance to attend…I am not
planning to run another. To attend will work out better
value than buying the product when it is ready to buy.

http://www.howtonetwork.net/products/item15.cfm

===========================================================

New CCNAs

Well done indeed to the below people who have put the
effort in and got the results:

Issa Kassambara

Lee Aspley who said:

‘Hi Paul,

Just passed my CCNA exam with a score of 916. There is no
way I could have done it without this invaluable resource.

Thank you

Lee Aspey CCNA’

Tendai Kavu passed on his second attempt and said:

‘Hey guys,

Just a note to say I passed my CCNA this morning (2nd
attempt). I was a little more relaxed this time and was
able to finish with time to spare.

Many thanks to Paul for all the material on this site
especially the videos on subnetting. I think like most
people I happened to stumble across the videos first on
YouTube and decided to join the site.’

Well done all of you.

===========================================================

Well done Stuart Juggins.

My friend and business partner Stuart Juggins has passed
his CCIE exam. He is CCIE 24803.

Stuart and I are preparing to launch the Cisco weekend
model in the USA at the moment and the web site should
be ready later next week. We will be releasing the 101
labs for the CCNA book in a couple of weeks time.

You can learn more about Stuart and Cisco boot camps in
the UK from CCNA to CCIE at:

http://networksinc.co.uk/

===========================================================

We Are Hiring

We have a new support guy on the site. Jon Rees is half
way through his CCNP and is now supporting the rack
customers as well as updating the site with content. Jon
was actually a former CCNA boot camp student and now runs
his own CCNA courses in North London and Cardiff

===========================================================

Free Rack Hours

Thanks to Paul Davis who posted a useful update on how
Java can break the SDM interface. Paul gets 10 extra
rack hours.

Make sure you don’t break your SDM interface when you
update Java.

http://bit.ly/sj5iF

===========================================================

Rack Issues

The rack is pretty stable at the moment but we have to
reboot it every week.

Please, Please, Please do not add any passwords to
any devices. They are blocked so if you work out some
sneaky way to add them please don’t. Please don’t change
the config registers either if you find a way.

Several customers lost rack slots and we had to call out
an engineer to recover a router on the weekend. I’m
afraid I will have to ban the culprit from the racks.

===========================================================

Feedback

I have been asked if I am open to feedback about the site.

I actually welcome it but most of the time nobody tells me
what they think. I consider all requests and those which

===========================================================

CCNA Exam Tips

I presume you all want to pass the CCNA? I ask because I
posted some essential exam tips last week. Tips which I
consider essential and out of 4500 readers 42 read them.

I sometimes wonder what is going on. Anyway, for those
who are bothered, here they are again.

How to Network Tip of the Week #95 – 16th July 2009

===========================================================

Welcome to the ninety fifth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

The weekend marketing course on how to build a million
dollar company went really well. I had 10 very excited
people leave on Sunday afternoon.

It has taken about 3 days for me to recover my energy and
get back to work. We are editing the videos at the moment
and they will be ready in a couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I will finish off the 101 Labs for the
CCNA exam in the next week.

===========================================================

New CCNAs

It looks like many of you have been putting the hours in
because this week I have had several e-mails and seen
people on the forum posting that they have passed their
exams. Please take a moment to log in and congratulate
them because I know you will appreciate it when you pass.

James Wedgeworth had a lot to say but his comments are
very helpful:

Sat the ICND2 exam yesterday (passed ICND1 in May) and am
pleased to be among Howtonetwork.net’s many success stories
at last!

When I joined in April I gained much confidence, motivation
(and envy to be honest) from the many testimonials posted
all over the site. “How am I EVER going to learn this stuff;
there is SO much!” I thought, but the many photos of past
members holding their CCNA certificates showed me it could
be done.

So thank you to Paul, for the resources and materials with
which to pass, but also for the pictures and stories that
played a significant role in those moments of doubt I know
all of us who pursue this certification experience. I hope
I can now repay the debt of gratitude and carry on
the tradition of success this site represents by adding yet
another success story to your testimonials. WAHOOOO!!!

Cheers from a grateful CCNA’

Great job James. I hope some people take the time to
congratulate you on the forum.

Well done to Jim Jason who passed with a 900. He is
cracking on with the CCNP already!

Congrats to Daniel Ottavi who passed with a nice 902.

Well done all of you.

===========================================================

How Much to Spend on Your CCNA Studies

Is money a bit tight for you? If money is an issue then I
can empathize because I have spent most of my life being
broke. I am doing okay now but all through my 20s and much
of my 30s I worried about money.

When I first studied for my CCNA you only needed to know
some theory so luckily I could just get away with buying a
book which had some practice exams on CD ROM inside it.
Now, when you come to study for your CCNA you are barraged
with choices.

===========================================================

Cisco Exam Braindumps

If you don’t already know, a braindump site is where you
can get the actual exam questions and answers. I don’t
usually mention them but I have been a little worried
lately when I see people mentioning the sites on the
forum. They usually say that they loved my site and also
used site X to help them pass.

The problem is that site X is a braindump. The issues with
this are:

http://www.howtonetwork.net/public/1196

==========================================================

Obsessing About the CCNA Exam

I see a lot of comments about the CCNA exam in the forum.
Many are bordering on obsessing about things which you can
do nothing about so why worry. Things such as:

1. Does the pre-exam questionnaire affect your score?
2. How are the multiple part questions scored?
3. Are the cameras in the testing room recording you?
4. What weight do the practicals have towards your final
score?
5. Can you use a calculator?

Trust me, you don’t need the extra anxiety worrying about
things you can’t change.

Rack Issues

The rack is pretty stable at the moment but we have to

===========================================================

Site Suggestions

I can see people on the forum asking about should they
buy various exam sims or other study guides. If you think
the site is missing something then please drop me a line
and we can consider adding it.

The whole point of this site is to ensure you don’t have
to waste money on other products.

cheers

===========================================================

Welcome to the ninety sixth www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

I was lucky enough to interview an expert on fear last
week. Tony Somers runs fear busing courses for corporates
and martial arts clubs. As we all experience fear at exam
time you might want to check the video out.

I have also posted a video of me sparring with my boxing
trainer. Hopefully you can join the paulbrowning.com tip
of the week and get more cool tips:

Tony somers Interview

===========================================================

New CCNAs

This has been a record month for members passing their
exams.

Well done to Stuart Myatt who passed his CCNA on his
second attempt. Nerves got the better of him first time#
round but he bounced right back and passed this week.

Hats off to Josh Kumar who bagged his CCNA with a very
nice 93%

Well done to both of you.

===========================================================

What to do After Your CCNA

So when you pass and have your shiny certificate hanging
on your wall what next?

More exams? Go for jobs? Have a rest?

Here is what I think:

===========================================================

New CCNP BSCI Labs

We have reviewed the current BSCI labs and want to make
some improvements. After speaking to Farai..our dual CCIE
he felt that they needed improving on.

To this end, next week we will be upgrading some, removing
some and adding another 15 or so. Please keep a look out
on the BSCI labs page for those.

Once they are all up we will be filming the videos.

===========================================================

CCNA Security Coming..

The labs for the CCNA security are being written as you
read this. There will be 20 labs plus 3 challenge labs for
you to configure.

Even if you don’t plan on taking the exam, these skills
will be a crucial part of your tool bag of abilities.

There will be no extra charge for all this content…just
the standard monthly membership fees.

===========================================================

101 Labs for the CCNA

I have filmed 50 of the labs and our CCIE Stuart Juggins
is filming the other 50 next week. I am hoping that it will
all be ready to roll in 2 weeks time.

The pack will be available as a book and CD set. I may
well post it to a special platinum members only section on
the site as well for viewing online.

===========================================================

Free Rack Hours

Thanks to John Doucette who asked a question about the
‘vlan database’ command. This is an old command and I
really don’t think you will need to know that for the CCNA
exam.

10 rack hours go to Johns account.

===========================================================

Rack Comments

The password command is blocked. The config-register
command is blocked. Same for username.

You can change encapsulation to PPP or frame relay with
the encapsulation command.

===========================================================

Cisco Weekday Course

Our sister company – Networks Inc. Ltd are now offering
a weekday CCNA boot camp. You can give Stuart Juggins a
call and mention howtonetwork.net to get any discounts:

There are courses all over the UK.

Welcome to the ninety seventh www.howtonetwork.net tip of
the week.

===========================================================

Welcome to another weekly tip.

I’ve just realised that I am two tips away from 100 tips!
That is a wake up call for me. 100 weeks of sending out
this weekly tip.

Since the first tip the site has really evolved and we
have had well over 100 students contact us to say they
have passed their exam. I suspect a lot more have passed
and not told me.

This weeks tip is pretty short because I am filming CCNA
videos for 8 hours per day at the moment.

===========================================================

CCNA Security Labs Done

We have a CCNA security course running this coming weekend
in Milton Keynes so we decided to do the labs first.

The labs will be added to the site in about a weeks time
once our coder has finished adding the 25 or so new CCNP
BSCI labs.

As the theory is done we will add one module at a time. I
really do encourage you to take your security exam and
also your CCNP if you want a long term career as a Cisco
engineer.

===========================================================

Note on Practice Exam Scores

There is only one reason people fail the CCNA or any other
Cisco exam. No matter what they say such as:

Ran out of time
Couldn’t get the network up
Didn’t understand the question
Nerves got the better of me
Got stuck in multi-part question
etc.

What to do After Your CCNA

So when you pass and have your shiny certificate hanging
on your wall what next?

More exams? Go for jobs? Have a rest?

Here is what I think:

===========================================================

Note on the Live Racks

Please note that you can use whatever encapsulation you
wish. You do need to type the command out in full:

encapsulation frame-relay
encapsulation ppp

and so on.

===========================================================

101 Labs Book

I have filmed 50 of the 101 labs. The other 50 should be
done for next week. Once we get the book cover done it
will be ready.

I’m hoping for around 2 weeks time.

===========================================================

Free Rack Hours

Thanks to Doleman who asked a question about the
port security command.

10 rack hours go to Richards account.
